Amy Foreman Spotlights

Amy Foreman, PhD, Senior Scientific Programme Manager at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL), where she leads delivery of the Human Ecosystems Transversal Theme as part of EMBL’s “Molecules to Ecosystems” Programme - is a leader in exposomics.

Dr Amy Foreman is a Senior Scientific Programme Manager at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL), where she leads delivery of the Human Ecosystems Transversal Theme as part of EMBL’s “Molecules to Ecosystems” Programme. The theme aims to get a complete understanding of how gene and environmental exposure interactions underlie human health and disease.

Spanning all of EMBL’s sites and EMBL’s European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI), Human Ecosystems aims to leverage, support and develop EMBL’s fundamental molecular biology research and services to address some of the biggest questions relating to environmental exposure effects on health. As part of her role, Amy leads efforts to unite communities around shared challenges – developing workshops and training programs, identifying joint research opportunities, and supporting the development of EMBL-EBI services for new user groups.

Alongside this work, Amy co-leads the Human Exposome Data Standards Study Group at the Global Alliance for Genomics and Health (GA4GH) with Carlos Cardenas-Iniguez. The group aims to develop consistent, shared ways to describe how the environment affects human health, especially over long periods of time and across different populations.

Amy completed her PhD. in ecotoxicology at the University of Exeter, UK and previously held the role of Research Associate/Research Project Manager at the University of Cambridge.

Fun Fact:

Amy grew up windsurfing and dinghy racing and is happiest in or on the water. She enjoys open water swimming and has her sights set on learning to free-dive next year.
